Protein Interaction Reporter Technologies: Exploring the Interactome from the Inside Out

Presented By:Professor James E. Bruce

Date: April 28th, 2026: 11:30AM ET – 12:30PM ET

Institution: University of Washington

Talk Abstract: Proteins carry out the vast majority of functions required to sustain life, yet these functions emerge only through a complex and dynamic network of intra- and inter-protein interactions collectively known as the interactome. Although the ability to visualize and interpret individual proteins and large protein complexes has advanced substantially over recent decades, direct information about interactomes within living systems and how these networks adapt to stress, disease, drug treatment, or other perturbations has remained elusive. Our laboratory has devoted significant effort to developing novel chemical cross-linking molecules, experimental methods, and computational tools collectively termed Protein Interaction Reporter (PIR) technologies. These approaches enable the characterization of protein conformations and interactions directly within live cells. This presentation will highlight key developments in PIR technologies and demonstrate how these advances are providing new insights into molecular mechanisms across diverse areas of human health and cellular biology.
